Quote Why do we need a Children's Hospital in El Paso? Quote

Coffee with Eliot Senator Eliot Shapleigh
El Paso, Texas

Quote First, today we have no children's hospital. Providence has several rooms and a wing dedicated to some children's health aspects. Every community our size has a children's hospital to attract the key sub-specialists that children need for quality care. For example, when doctors administer anesthesia to a child, very small doses are needed and sometimes doctors give too much. In children's hospitals, the entire facility is designed around children's needs -- so family members sleep in the room, surgery rooms are smaller, and even the instruments the doctors use have a different design. Finally, the children's hospital is a key to the growth of our medical school. Together, we can attract many new highly trained doctors to our Medical Center of the Americas. Quote

Quote What is the impact of Asarco's bankruptcy on El Paso homeowners? Quote

Coffee with Eliot Senator Eliot Shapleigh
El Paso, Texas

Quote Good morning, Peggy! Asarco filed bankrupcy to saddle taxpayers with $12 billion in liability in 74 communities all around the US. In El Paso, thousands of homeowners have lead on their property and don't know it. That lead came from Asarco and Ogilvy Norton. When Asarco is discharged in Chaper 11, homeowners will have to clean the lead on their own tab. Asarco will have transferred the cost of 100 years of polluting straight to homeowners. Quote

Quote Are you following the Presidential race? What do you think? Quote

Coffee with Eliot Senator Eliot Shapleigh

Quote I must confess, I love presidential election years. I love the excitement of the campaign, of watching candidates debate, and going to rallies where thousands of people participate in democrcay. What seems clear to me is that the Iraq War and quality healthcare will dominate the race. I hope the process creates a strong consensus for real progress, since so much of the last few years have been wasted in partisan politics, divison, and lack of progress. Quote

Quote Whether Asarco opens in El Paso again will define our community for a generation. Our office works to inform our constituents on health and safety issues affecting us, including Asarco. You can make a difference today by voicing your opinion with leaders and in the media, and share the story with your neighbors. Let's keep El Paso's future clean and bright. Quote

Quote Did you dress up for Holloween? Quote

Coffee with Eliot Senator Eliot Shapleigh

Quote No. Not this year. Since both of my children have packed off to college, I have not been as involved in Holloween -- I am sorry to say. Quote
